Covid 19 Anxiety

By Edison de Mello, MD, PhD

Your heart races, you feel the panic, sometimes it impacts your sleep, you are easily irritated, and it may even hit harder when it’s time to leave the house. It’s a feeling of fear or apprehension about what’s yet to come.

The current COVID-19 epidemic has been terrifying in multiple ways. Feelings of fear, anxiety, sadness, and uncertainty have consumed most of us, throwing into question what we knew as “our normal ways of living”. Coping with it has had it’s toll during the endemic with so many of us feeling overwhelmed and afraid. It is ironic but a relief to know however that our fear is a shared global experience right now. The “we-are-all-in-the-same-boat” reality somehow gives us a sense of community. The fear and anxiety that most of us experience is a reasonable, normal, and healthy response to this terrifying pandemic.

So give yourself permission to feel ill-at-ease. Don’t be so hard on yourself. But let’s also talk about scientifically proven ways to help you feel better.
