Decrease All-Cause Mortality this October with Nutrient of the Month: Circumin

Circumin, the main compound in the staple indian spice turmeric, is valued in many traditional cultures as the most powerful herb in medicine.

Turmeric has been used in herbal protocols for its medicinal properties for thousands of years by practitioners in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda alike. So why all the hype?

  1. It minimizes symptoms of arthritis
    Turmeric was put to the test against the popular rheumatoid arthritis medication diclofenac sodium (an NSAID). In the study, researchers found turmeric to provide the highest percentage in overall disease scores. Turmeric was also found to have no adverse effects whereas diclofenac sodium was shown to increase risk for leaky gut and for heart disease (6).
  2. It may help to prevent certain cancers
    Multiple studies on circumin’s effect on cancer cells have shown vast anti cancer effects. It was shown to kill cancer cells and prevent them from replicating. The most potent effects were shown in breast, colon, stomach, and skin cancer cells (7).
  3. It may slow or prevent blood clots
    In various studies, the use of turmeric reduced platelet aggregation, aiding in the reduction of clot formation (1).
  4. It reduces symptoms of depression
    Because of its ability to increase brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), circumin has been found to battle symptoms of depression in various clinical trials (2).
  5. It fights against inflammation
    An Oncogene study performed in 2004 compared the anti-inflammatory effects of multiple compounds, noting circumin as the most potent among other powerful drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and many others (3).
  6. It promotes glowing skin
    Circumin’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties have proven effective in treating multiple skin conditions. Skin benefits include speeding up wound healing, calming the pores to decrease acne and acne scarring, giving major glow factor, and controlling psoriasis flares (4, 5).
  7. It may help to regulate cholesterol
    Circumin’s anti oxidative properties allow it to be comparable to lipitor, a cholesterol lowering medication as noted in a study published in Drugs in R & D
  8. It works as a natural painkiller
    Widely accepted in western and eastern clinics, turmeric/circumin has been prided for its analgesic properties. Various studies have suggested its benefits for arthritic pain, burn pain and wound healing, post-operative pain, orofacial pain, neuropathic pain, and more (12, 13, 14, 15, 16).
  9. It may help to manage diabetes
    Circumin has been cherished for its ability to lower blood sugar. A recent study found circumnin to be 400 times more effective than a common diabetes drug, metformin by activating the enzyme AMPK (8). This gives it potential to be an effective treatment for insulin resistance and for reversing diabetes.
  10. It battles obesity
    In a study published in Biofactors, researchers found that circumin reduced the inflammatory properties of obesity as well as reduced the growth of adipose (fat) cells, preventing further development of obesity (9).
  11. It may help to manage Inflammatory Bowel Disease
    A meta-analysis performed in 2009 compared circumin to a mesalazine, a common drug used in ulcerative colitis. Patients taking a placebo or the mesalazine were over 4 times as likely to experience a relapse of symptoms (10).
  12. It assists in detoxification
    Circumin helps to support the liver in detoxification, aiding the body in eliminating dangerous compounds such as carcinogens and other toxins (17).

It isn’t hard to suggest turmeric may be one of the most powerful herbs on the planet. So how do we reap the reward?!

Food:

Add this favorite spice to quite literally any recipe from soups to curries to even desserts. Couple it with black pepper to enhance absorption. My favorite way is to make a turmeric golden milk latte by simply adding frothed coconut milk to turmeric tea with a sprinkle of cinnamon and nutmeg.
